State of the Base

What has happened at The Base in 2016? A lot of things, but not as much as I had hoped!

Highlights

One of the highlights in 2016 was the 76 Patrons contest with 11 great entries.

The Zhodani Base now has reached over 700 fans at facebook.

I have written a number of reviews and Jonathan Sherlock has helped me writing two.

We have been allowed to repost stuff from the defunct Traveller Freeport website.

I have read Marc Miller’s book, Agent of the Imperium.

I have read Gregory P. Lee’s forthcoming book The Usual Suspects. It is mostly set in Rhylanor Subsector. It is really good! I hope it will be released in 2017.

The last highlights is a Kickstarters that has delivered.Β The Things We Leave Behind (for another game) by our Traveller playing and map making friend Stephanie McAlea at Stygian Fox.

Lowlights

All the things I didn’t have time to write or finish.

There was no Amber Zone Contest this year.

Spinward Traveller is a Kickstarter that still hasn’t delivered. Ken Whitman, please finish this project!

Traveller Ascension: Imperial Warrant Boardgame is another Kickstarter that still hasn’t delivered.

Site Stats

The Zhodani Base has about 5900 proper visitors each month. That is a little better than last year.

  2. Spherical Space Ships (1)
  3. Traveller Inspiration: Free e-books (new)
  4. The Final Zhodani Base 76 Patrons Writing Contest (new)

We can see that the pdfs are still very popular. Both in searches and in the popular pages list.

The long search string “free traveller rpg pdf downloads” is a bit weird. That may be someones favorite search or a bookmark.

To-do List

We will run an Amber Zone contest this year. (Be prepared!)

Expect to see at least some more reviews of Science Fiction books and Traveller Products.

We will repost some more stuff from the defunct Traveller Freeport website.

Other than that I hope to finish some stuff that I promised or just planned to do.

Lowlights

Spinward Traveller is a Kickstarter that still hasn’t delivered. Ken Whitman, please finish this project! You are already a year late!

Other than that I hope to finish some stuff that I promised or just planned to do.

Pulp-O-Mizer State of the Base

State of the Base

What has happened at the Base in 2014? A lot of things!

To-do List

Looking back at last years to-do list I can see that I haven’t done everything of what I planned to do. But instead I opened the Amber Zone web-site. If I had more time, I would have done more.

For 2015 I plan to do the things I didn’t have enough time to do in 2014. Maybe, something else as well. I have some plans, but I cannot say anything yet.

Pulp-O-Mizer State of the Base

Another highlight was the Traveller5 review guest-post by . This post quickly became the most read post at the Base.

Since March the Zhodani Base hosts the Coreward Fanzine byΒ Paul J. Drye.

The Base now uses the Twenty-Fourteen theme.

My post old post about The Average Traveller Universe seem to attract lots of surfers from eastern Europe. But is has dropped a bit in popularity. Mainly because I have blocked a lot of traffic from eastern Europe.

Hacking

In 2013 I didn’t get hacked. πŸ™‚ There were lots of hacking attempts. The most annoying thing about these attempts are that they steal bandwidth. (For one week I was hit about once every minute with a dictionary attack from Ukraine and Belarus.) I have now blocked large parts of China and eastern Europe from my site. Countries where I know there are Traveller players are not blocked, but some IP addresses from those countries may still be blocked if they try to hack the Base.

Visitors from Brazil whose user-agent is a fake Google-Bot should change browser or ISP, since I’ll block all fake Google Bots. Brazil is a country known for hacking and I guess that the ISPs in Brazil thought that if they pretend that they are Google-Bots, less of the internet will be blocked. But they only make the problem worse for their customers.

As a safety precaution I have also blocked the wp-admin directory from all. This means that this site currently isn’t a multi user site. I.e. if you are a registered user you cannot login. If you are a registered user and want to update your entry in the Contributors Page, then just contact me and I’ll update your entry.

To-do List

Looking back at last years to-do list I can see that I (or Jonathan) have written a few reviews andΒ  I have written about spherical ships and I have updated some old stuff and I have continued posting on Facebook. If I had more time, I would have done more.

For 2014 I plan to write more reviews and update some more old stuff. I will add Stiatlchepr (by Dale Jenkins) to my Space Atlas. I am also planning to write something about Traveller Aliens.

On the more technical side of the base I plan to use sharing plugins to connect to Facebook and Google+. Then I can make a short post about some traveller, science fiction and astronomy news at the Base and it will be automatically posted at the other sites.

Pulp-O-Mizer State of the Base

State of the base

What has happened at the Base in 2012? A lot of things!

The coolest thing was the 15 entries in the 76 Patrons Writing Contest. πŸ™‚
I hope we can beat that in 2013! I’ll add a few bucks to make the first prize even better. Sponsors are Welcome!

The most annoying thing this year was being hacked. πŸ™
Well the base wasn’t really hacked. It was vandalized by a script-kiddie. Nothing was lost, and I didn’t lose control over anything. A script found a vulnerability and vandalized what it could. I could restore everything. This made me upgrade to the latest version of WordPress (the software that is running the blog). I also added two plugins that I thought looked cool. A dice roller and a forum.

One of these plugins had a vulnerability. The Base was vandalized again. 😑
Now I am a lot more restrictive about the plugins I add.

When upgrading the software I also got a better tool for site stats. All I knew before was that I had about 300.000 accesses each month. Now I know that I have about 4000 proper visitors each month

The 5 most popular posts on the blog was:

  1. Alien Fonts
  2. A Fat Cat or an interesting ship
  3. WriteUps for planets in the Foreven Sector
  4. Traveller 5th Edition at Kickstarter
  5. Sword Worlds revisited by Mongoose

The 5 most popular search words/phrases for finding the blog was:

  1. zhodani base
  2. tatu
  3. alien font
  4. traveller rpg
  5. tatu band

My post old post about The Average Traveller Universe seem to attract lots of surfers from eastern Europe. πŸ™„

I am looking forward to 2013. On my to-do list there are a few reviews that needs to be written. I will also write something about spherical ships. When I have time I will also do a few updates of some old stuff. I will continue posting news about the Zhodani Base, Traveller and astronomy at Facebook.

Cheers
