A Vargr Subsector - Uksoulez Subsector

March 15th, 2011 by BeRKA

Using the ideas form the previous post, I wanted to make a Vargr subsector. I used my random subsector generator and selected Vargr as race and backwater as settlement. Everything else was using the default settings. Using this subsector I also wanted to try the new print style at TravellerMap.

I must have been very lucky. On the first try a very nice subsector was generated. I only had to move three worlds to make room for the names of the Interstellar States.

There are backwater independent worlds and 2 interstellar states here. Lets find the adventure and the place called home. To do so we need to invent some background for this subsector. Lets say that the Tingoeg Union is an expansive Vargr State, and that the Kague Territory is the reaction to that. To stop the Tingoeg Union expansion a charismatic Vargr called Kague united a number of planets. That was 100 years ago. Now these 2 states have fought a few wars, and there is currently a cold war going on. The independent planets are part of a neutral zone.

Adventure can then be found in lots of places in the subsector. Some ideas;

  • At Unaets (2119) the PCs can help the Kague Territory can set up a spy station.
  • Ozadzugh (2114) is balkanized. Tingoeg Union and Kague Territory support different nations. The PCs can spy or fight in wars.
  • Dzaloukh (1720) has tech-level 0. Has there been a war here? The PCs can help survivors.
  • A J-1 ship can reach lots of worlds in both interstellar states. The PCs can trade and do other jobs using their old J-1 trader.
  • Gnuengarr (2014) is a low tech world with almost no atmosphere. The PCs can ship supplies here, and someone might try to stop them.

A place called home might be Uksoulez (2013). It’s a high population world where the PCs might know some people that can help them or can employ them. An alternative might be Dourtsuen (2214).

All ideas from the previous post are now fulfilled. There are a number of backwater independent worlds. There are 2 interstellar states. There are obvious adventures. Finally, a place that can feel as home has been suggested.

What makes a subsector popular?

March 13th, 2011 by BeRKA

After asking about the preferred subsector in the Spinward Marches on facebook and on CotI we can see what the online community think. From the results I have created a color coded chart for popularity. More green is more popular.

Most popular subsectors

Here we can see that the most popular subsectors are District 268 and Regina.

The reason for District 268 seems to be that it has lots of independent backwater worlds, that are great for adventure, and are close to the Imperium and the Sword Words so that there also can be some interstellar diplomatic intrigues.

For Regina, a good reason is that the players and referees feel at home here.  A lot has been published for this subsector. The first adventure (The Kinunir) started here.

Another slightly less popular subsector is the Sword Worlds. Who does not like this subsector, partly borrowed from H. Beam Piper? Rhylanor and Jewell are also popular. Probably since these are close to Regina, and also have published adventures within them.

The least popular subsectors are Lanth, Lunion and Mora. Lanth is quite divided. Its worlds more feels like they are part of Rhylanor, Vilis and Regina subsectors. Lunion and Mora are quite ordinary, and does not really have the interesting features that the popular subsectors have.

What lessons can we learn from this (if we want to create an interesting subsector)?

  • There should be some backwater independent worlds.
  • There should be 2 or more interstellar states quite close.
  • There should be obvious adventures.
  • There should be a place that can feel as home.

The 4518th Lift Infantry Brigade (Duke Of Reginia’s Own Huscarles)

Shoulder Service Insignia

Description

On a blue silhouetted right cylinder 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 2 inches (5.08 cm) in width overall within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) with a Maroon Central Stripe, 3 stars arrayed above a Unicorn’s Profile with the point of a bayonet in the background. A sunburst in the foreground at the bottom

4518th Lift Infantry Brigade Shoulder Service Insignia

Symbolism

The Blue background alludes to the vastness of space and the branch color of the infantry. The maroon central stripe is homage to the presently serving seconded Imperial Marines within the brigade, but also  legacy of of the unit origins form the Imperial Marine cadre that founded the unit after the 2nd Frontier War. The Three stars are in remembrance of the Thrid, Fourth and Fifth Frontier Wars where the brigade fought with valor and steadfast loyalty to the Imperium. That very loyalty and service in the Imperial Army is again seen in the sunburst in the foreground. The Unicorn’s profile is the personal crest of the Duke of Regina, of which the brigade serves as the primer household troops, but also represents the “Emergent Unicorn” (also known as the Bridled Steed) constellation spanning the Chronor and Jewell subsectors and recalls the fierce battles where the Huscarles gave the supreme sacrifice during the Third Frontier War in the service of their Duke and the 3rd Imperium. The bayonet point in the background is the current steadfast vigilance and readiness to defend the spinward marches now and in the future.

A useful generator for generating Sword Worlder ship-names or similar stuff is the Motto in Old Norse generator.

I leave it up to you to come up with some good examples…

Zeroster

October 7th, 2010 by Rat Traveller

Patron: Scientist
Required Skills: combat
Required Equipment: weapons
Players’ Information:
The group is contacted by Doctor Wilson Curculionidae and Cassandre Cameroon. The Doctor would like to hire the group as bodyguards for himself and his research team. He explains he has hired Ms. Cameroon (Hunting 4) to go on a safari mission to Cigura (E676500)(Hex 0205) in the Fessor Subsector to collect zeroster.

This animal while not dangerous is difficult to track and is prey for several dangerous carnivore species. Doctor Curculionidae believes he can develop several cosmetic items from it which will be more readily acceptable in the current market. There is an environmental group called Natural Body who are against this and have made several veiled threats to the Doctor and his three research assistants. One member of the group will need to accompany Ms. Cameroon on her hunts while the others will need to provide security on the Doctor’s lab ship and anytime the Doctor or his staff must go to the surface.

The group will be paid Cr. 500 per week each or Cr. 100 upfront and .5% of any profits made from sales of anything developed during the mission. The Doctor expects the hunting and on site research to last 8 weeks. Travel and accommodations will be provided aboard the Doctor’s lab ship (The Pretty Princess).

Drought

October 7th, 2010 by Ewan Quibell

Required Equipment: Grav Vehicle or Small Craft

3014 Apinanto E431432-6 Ni Po 303 Na

Apinanto is a backwater system in the Saphi Cluster of Fessor Subsector of Foreven. Overlooked by everyone except those who only have jump 1, and even then the mainworld itself is largely ignored as fuel is only available from skimming the Gas Giants.

Not only is Apinanto ignored because there is no fuel, it’s also ignored because there is no trade. Apinantoians are a subsistence lot. They produce enough food and manufacture enough goods for themselves. When surplices are available there generally isn’t anyone to sell them to, and there isn’t anything the Apinantoians need to buy. The 37,526 inhabitants pretty much get along by themselves.

There is only one populated area on the planet. West of Clark’s Mountains rainfall creates the tributaries that become the Apinan River that for millennia has carved a deep gorge through the landscape to deposit its water into the depression that holds Clark’s Sea. Here the westerly prevailing winds evaporate the water blowing it back up the gorge to deposit it as rain on Clark’s Mountains to continue the cycle. Nearly everyone makes their living from the river; whether it’s to grow crops in the river valley, to find ores on the sides of the gorge to mine, or to run the boats up and down the river providing transport.

The source of the people’s livelihood is now the source of their troubles. The rains have stopped, and while this in itself isn’t a problem, what is, is that they have stopped for weeks. The water level in the Apinan has dropped to an all time low such that barges and river boats can no longer travel its length. Roads, such as they are, are just local affairs in the towns and villages, never between them. And with the air so thin, even in the deep gorge where it collects into more than just a trace, there are no aircraft or helicopters.

Through the phone and radio systems the Jose council, the oligarchy that runs the place, know that there are people stuck along the river in the wrong villages, boats are grounded on sand banks, fruits are sitting in their crates on the wharfs, and the alcohol and wood used for fuel is sitting next to them causing shortages everywhere.

The players have made their way to Apinanto for whatever reason, and they are currently at Apinanto Down, a patch of bedrock with a landing beacon, blast wall and a hanger about 1km from Clark’s Town, the capital. The counsel approaches the players for help and while it might seem like the thing to do there is one slight problem; the council have nothing with which to pay the PCs. Their stocks of grain and meat are needed as the crops that do not have irrigation will be devastated, and the livestock that they feed may die. There are many jobs for players with a grav vehicle, or small craft to do however.

Moving supplies. Wood and alcohol need to be moved to the market villages and farms where there are shortages to ensure that the compressors providing air to the habitats keep working. Fruits, grains and livestock need to be moved from the villages and farms to the towns.

Moving people. People who have been stranded need to be ferried back to their homes or places of work. They may have been visiting relatives, taking a vacation, or been on business trips and now need to get back home, and those who are injured or sick need to be moved to hospital in Clark’s Town.

Moving equipment. Boats and barges that have been stranded on sand banks need lifting off and moving back to their home wharfs. There is farm equipment sent for repair that needs delivering to those that sent it, there are new product that needs to be delivered to those who ordered it, and replacement compressors delivered to those who need them.

Salvage. With the water levels so low there are a number of boats, barges and equipment that have been lost to the river in the past that are now visible and reachable. If the PC’s other priorities have been met salvaging these would be a boon to the Apinanto’s economy providing unexpected resources for the future.

In order for the PCs to help they will need to set-up communications to co-ordinate and prioritise the tasks that need to be done and work out a flight plan to accomplish it as efficiently as possible.

In addition to the immediate relief work that needs to be undertaken the council would like to know the reason for the drought, and if the players continue to help and scan the planet they may find:

The second 76 Patrons Contest

July 1st, 2010 by BeRKA

It is now time for the second Summer Zhodani Base 76 Patrons Writing Contest. For those who thought last years prize was just for collectors, I have something for you that I hope everyone (and your kids) can enjoy. This years first prize is “The Space Warriors” by Stewart Cowley, who also wrote the TTA books. :-)

The style of the entries should be in the style of the patrons in CT Supplement 6, 76 Patrons.

Last years winning patron (by Raz) can be found here:

Two of my own patrons can be found here:

The contest starts now and ends 30 Sept 2010. Write as many entries as You like.

After the 30:th of September 2010, all entries will be posted on the Zhodani Base. Registered users (on the 1:st of July) and participants in the competition may then vote (using a points system) for the entries they like the most.

By entering the contest You allow your entry to be posted at the Zhodani Base. All entries might also be posted in PDF format as a free down-loadable file at the Zhodani Base.

All entrants will be given credit for their work and will retain the copyright on their entries.

Some general guidelines:

1, Each entry should be less than 1000 words.

2, One image may be used in each entry. You must either have the right to the image, or it must be used under some sort of free licence. Wikimedia Commons is a good place to find an image that You can use. Please provide information about the image. (Is it Yours? If not, where have You found it? What license is used?) Note: You don’t need to use an image.

3, Each patron should offer 6 options.

4, Each patron should be placed in the Foreven Sector. You may use the version of the Foreven Sector that can be found here at the Zhodani Base. (You don’t have to use this version.)

5, Please don’t force the PCs to sign up for (what they think are) illegal activities. It is better if they find that out later, or in some way are forced to take illegal action…

6, Please use a spell checker!

Send Your entries by e-mail. Please use plain text format and attach the image, if You select to use one. Word files will not be accepted!

As an alternative, contributors to the Zhodani Base may log in and write their entries here. Entries posted that way will be made visible when all other are.

Please include a preferred nickname (that can be Your real name) to show on the Zhodani Base. If You expect to win, include an address to send the first prize to.

Some help: (That you don’t have to use.)

You may use Mongoose Traveller rules to design something for your patron, since the Zhodani Base now has a Foreven Free Sector License.

Adventure ideas (repost)

May 18th, 2010 by BeRKA

Since I think these ideas were quite good, I’ll repost them here. It is probably quite difficult to dig these up from the OTEATP group where I first posted them.

These are just some of my thoughts about how to build a simple adventure, and not meant as criticism to anyone. Take a look at at, and tell us what You think and add Your own ideas to it, and then we will eventually have an adventure cookbook.

So, when we run out of ideas, lets have a look at this: (Don’t follow the parts of the recipe that You don’t like!)

1: There is a theory that there are only 36 different dramatic situations. (Hey, 36 You say, then we can toss the coyns, very CT indeed, or use the red dice white dice thingie…) These situations are listed here.
Use one or two of them…

2: Adapt the situation to the CT universe.

3: Use an encyclopedia, and look up two or three words at random, and include these in the adventure.

4: Look in an online newspaper, and pick two or three minor events, and adapt these to the CT universe.

5: Use an idea from Your favourite television action program. (But not from “Murder she wrote”)

6: Use a really strange idea from your favourite television sci-fi program.

7: ???

8: ???

etc…

99: Put it all together.

Thoughts or ideas?

Twilight Sector - A new TU

November 2nd, 2009 by BeRKA

Cool, a new traveller product to review. 8-)

First we need to understand that Twilight Sector is not located a few sectors rimward of the Solomani Rim. It is not even located in the Official Traveller Universe. It is located in an entirely new Alternative Traveller Universe.

How dare they? Heretics! ;-)

Well, this is actually a good thing. I have hoped for a long time now that someone would dare to make a commercial product for a new TU. The reason for this is all the problems there are with the OTU and that there are always some whining canon-heads that complains when you try to do something creative.

There have been other attempts to create other alternative traveller universe to get around the problems with the OTU. Two examples are Proto-Traveller and Dark Hunter. I have even tried to make my own traveller universes. One based on the Elite game, and one based on history.

In the Twilight Sector Campaign Setting Sourcebook we get a very good description of the history of this universe and of the Major powers. There are also many pages of library data in the end of the book. This is very useful since it is a new setting, and no old library data can be used if you want to play in this TU.

There are a few interesting differences from the OTU. First, there are no aliens (but there have been one or more ancient races). There are mutants instead. Maximum jump range is 8 (not 6). There are also interstellar radio with messages travelling up to 8 parsecs in a week.

Since the book is called Twilight Sector, I would have guessed that it would be a bit like other sector books (Rim of Fire, Behind the Claw or Gateway to Destiny.) But it wasn’t. There is no full description of a traveller sector with maps and UPPs for every world. Instead we get a very good description of half a subsector (6 worlds and two space stations). That was a bit of a disappointment when I had hoped for something else.

One of the worlds described is a copy of Earth called Terra/Sol. Even though a copy of Earth seems a bit silly, I am looking forward to read about why and how it was made. The ancients in this TU must have been much more powerful than Grandfather in the OTU. Maybe even as powerful as Slartibartfast.

In the book there are many nice images. Some are in colour. Some (like the cover) are a bit sexist. The worlds described have nice isodecahedron worldmaps and nice system maps. But the subsector map is quite ugly and not at all of the same quality as the other illustrations.

I really hope that Terra/Sol games will publish more books about this interesting TU. I also hope that this will inspire other publishers to make their own Traveller Universes.
